Dr. Dale Perritt, professor and chair of the Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Agriculture in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, has been named recipient of the Distinguished Professor Award by the SFA Alumni Association.

Perritt was honored at the association’s annual Celebration of Excellence on May 7 at the SFA campus. “Dr. Perritt’s contributions to the Department’s resource base are enormous. He helped steward the equine facility, three new instructional facilities at the Poultry Resource Center, and has helped secure the continued funding of the Plant and Soil Analysis and Computer-Assisted Design laboratories. Under his direction, Dale has allowed the Department of Agriculture to make giant strides in providing the kind of facilities that are truly at the forefront of higher education in the state,” said Dr. Dave Creech, SFA Regents Professor and director of the SFA Mast Arboretum.

“Within the community at large, Dr. Perritt’s work has contributed to the church, to historical organizations, to youth programs, and to a great body of family friends,” said Dr. Patsy Johnson Hallman, SFA professor emeritus and former dean of the College of Education. “His record of work and service, his colleagues, his friends, and his family attest to the rightness of awarding the Distinguished Professor Award to Dr. Dale Perritt. I believe the university will be honored by naming him the recipient of the 2009 award.”

Perritt earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural education from East Texas State University in 1973 and added a Master of Science in agriculture in 1976. He received his Ed.D. in agricultural and extension education from Mississippi State University in 1981.

Perritt joined the SFA faculty in 1981 as an assistant professor and was named a full professor in 1992. In 1997, he became chair of the Department of Agriculture.

Perritt’s departmental accomplishments include the construction of the equine facility, a formal agreement with Tyler Junior College to plan and offer general agriculture at a distance, and dedication of the Walter Todd Agriculture Research Center. He also negotiated a gift of 24 registered Angus cattle valued at $100,000.
He serves on the national board for the American Association of Schools and Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources, and as a faculty athletic representative to the NCAA and the Southland Conference. Perritt serves on the editorial board and referees for the Texas Journal of Agricultural and Natural Resources.
In 2003, Perritt received the Brother of the Century Award from the National Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. He was honored with the Outstanding Professor Award for the SFA Department of Agriculture for 1986-87 and 1990-91. He received the SFA Teaching Excellence Award in 1995.

Perritt has contributed a hand-made knife to the SFA Alumni Association Silent Auction for the past 15 years, raising more than $5,000 for scholarships.

The SFA Alumni Association established the Distinguished Professor Award in 1966 to honor a current SFA faculty member who has made significant contributions to society and whose accomplishments and careers have brought credit to the institution.
